Are you also a person who comes out of the wash room with tears in your eyes? Is your bowel movement so painful that you tend to avoid solid food in order to stay away from your daily needs?

Have you noticed an irritating mass coming out your bottom which is so itchy that you wish to scratch it until it bleeds? Well, the diagnosis is quite clear. You might be suffering from what is called ‘Piles’. But there is nothing to worry, visit a colorectal surgeon to help you to solve your problem.

Hemorrhoids, also known as Piles is a medical term used to define swellings which contain enlarged blood vessels (veins) around the rectum and anus. Even though the exact mechanism which causes these is not known, As a result of obesity, pregnancy, chronic cough, heavy weight lifting, chronic constipation and prolong hours of standing, the pressure in the veins will increase and ultimately give rise to swellings in the bottom area.

Most people with piles, do not complain of any symptoms until the condition becomes quite severe with fresh bleeding and mucous like discharge following defecation, itchiness, soreness and redness around the anus with a lump, bulging out of the anus after passing stools which might need to be pushed in. Affected people may not complain of any pain unless the blood supply to the area is impaired or completely cut off.

Painful or severe symptoms which interfere with the day to day activities and decrease the quality of life will need medical advice. Identification of causative agents and proper, timely treatments will definitely result in a positive outcome.

Out of the various types of medical and surgical interventions available to treat Piles, Minimally Invasive Procedure for Hemorrhoids (MIPH) 0r painless stapler surgery is known to be very popular since it acts an alternative approach to surgical interventions made for piles.

MIPH is defined as a minimally invasive surgical technique in which a band of loose or prolapsed mucosa and sub mucosa in the rectum is excised , proximal to the piles and disrupted mucosa is fixed by ‘stapled end to end mucosal anastomosis’.

This will ultimately occlude the blood supply to the superior hemorrhoidal artery above the hemorrhoidal tissue, resulting in the retraction of prolapsed mucosa back to its original anatomical position. A special circular stapler known as PPHO3 is used in the anastomosis and the whole maneuver will take around 30-45 minutes.

Indications for this type of a surgery include, Grade III hemorrhoids (comes out on straining and needs to be pushed in) and grade IV hemorrhoids (prolapsed out and cannot be pushed in) which are found to be reducible on manipulation at surgery.

However, there can also be some contra indications, which may prevent from an individual undergoing MIPH, which include very large internal hemorrhoids, internal hemorrhoids which may not heal even after non-surgical treatments, large external hemorrhoids which cannot be manipulated in the operating room and patients with full thickness rectal prolapse or anal stenosis.

MIPH, has several advantages over surgical treatments such as minimal pain, minimal blood loss, quick recovery and reduced hospital stay. In fact, patients will be able to return to their normal daily activities within a day.

Since any treatment method can have its own drawbacks as well, according to the latest updates on Minimally Invasive Procedure for Hemorrhoid (MIPH) it is known to have resulted in some serious complications such as rectal perforation, strictures and obstruction, retroperitoneal sepsis, retro pneumo-peritoneum and recto-vaginal fistula.

Therefore, it is very important to seek medical advice from a well experienced colorectal surgeon, in order to minimize the above mentioned complications and to reach a quick and painless recovery after piles stapler surgery.
